Staff Report

Jaevon Alexander had an incredibly difficult senior year as both of his parents passed away early in Buena Regional High’s baseball season. But that didn’t stop him from being a productive player for the Chiefs, who last week saw their season come to an end after a second-round state playoff loss against Woodstown.

Alexander hit .286 for the year with 18 hits and 19 runs scored, and he finished up a very solid three-year varsity career that saw him hit .335 with 60 hits, 42 runs scored, 35 RBIs, 13 doubles, 22 walks and 14 stolen bases.

South Jersey Glory Days Staff Writer Dave O’Sullivan caught up with Alexander for a 5 Questions feature following a thrilling 9-8 walk-off win over Holy Spirit in late April that saw Alexander have perhaps his best game of the season. He went 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles, an RBI and a season-high three runs scored.

“He’s a leader by example. He’s really quiet, really humble. He’s a great kid,” said Buena coach Dan Caregnato. “He’s a young man battling through adversity, and baseball is his absolute love and it’s been a positive thing for him to use the game as an outlet. For the guys to carry him through (this season) has really brought everybody together.”

Check out our 5 QUESTIONS with Buena Regional senior outfielder Jaevon Alexander:

QUESTION: What do you like most about Buena Regional High and the baseball program?

ALEXANDER: This is a great school overall. The teachers and staff are really nice, and the baseball team — I love these guys. They’re funny, you can trust them. I just love being around these guys.

QUESTION: Which teammate do you think is the most underrated?

ALEXANDER: Brayden Pio (junior pitcher, went 4-2 with 20 strikeouts in 27 innings). He wasn’t really a pitcher at first, but we put him in against ACIT and he shut them down.

QUESTION: If high school players had contracts, what’s one perk you would demand to be included in your contract?

ALEXANDER: A car sounds nice!

QUESTION: What would be your ultimate vacation spot?

ALEXANDER: Turks and Caicos. I’ve looked it up online, I’ve seen pictures. It’s a beautiful area.

QUESTION: Who inspires you the most, and why?

ALEXANDER: My mom (Victoria) inspires me the most. She showed me to never give up, no matter what the situation is and good things will happen. No matter how many bad things happen, good will always come.
