(Throughout the school year South Jersey Glory Days will be giving fans a quick insight into the lives of area athletes with our segment called “5 Questions” where we ask student-athletes a few random questions about the sports they play, their lives, pop culture or anything else that pops into our heads!)
Staff Report
The Ocean City High wrestling program has been pretty successful under current coach Dan Calhoun, as the Red Raiders have had three 100-win wrestlers in the past seven years. The most recent to earn that highly coveted career milestone is senior Tommy Grimley, who has grinded out a solid career the last three years after a bit of a slow start as a freshman.
He had just 11 wins as a rookie wrestling at 126 pounds before bumping up to 138 pounds by the end of the season. This season, he’s undefeated at 22-0 and picked up win No. 100 during Ocean City’s loss to Delsea in the South Jersey Group 3 semifinals on Monday night.
South Jersey Glory Days Staff Writer Dave O’Sullivan caught up with Grimley following the match against the Crusaders.
5 QUESTIONS with Ocean City senior 165-pounder Tommy Grimley:
QUESTION: What has been the best moment of your high school wrestling career?
ANSWER: It was my sophomore year, we were down by five against Mainland going into the final bout. I got the pin and the entire crowd went crazy. It was Senior Night, and it was just a huge win for us.
QUESTION: Who is your favorite pro wrestler?
ANSWER: I have to go with (former Cornell wrestler and 4-time NCAA champion) Kyle Dake because he’s been so dominant. He’s one guy who I watch film and try to replicate my wrestling after him.
QUESTION: What’s the quickest you’ve ever pinned somebody, and the quickest you’ve been pinned?
ANSWER: The quickest I ever pinned somebody is, I believe, 13 seconds. The quickest I’ve been pinned is probably within the first 20 seconds when I was about 12 years old.
QUESTION: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
ANSWER: I see myself hopefully running my own business. Either that or a police officer. I see myself having a nice family and all that.
QUESTION: What will you miss most about Ocean City High?
ANSWER: Being in such a unique area, and being with such a brotherhood of teammates, just bonding with likeminded people. We also have a great coaching staff. Just the practices, getting the chance to run on the beach every day — not many kids get to do that. Just all those components.
