Editor’s Note: This school year, the South Jersey Glory Days staff will be having some fun with some of the athletes we cover in the form of a feature called “5 Questions.” The goal is to highlight some of the upperclassmen who don’t normally get a lot of press coverage and give them a chance to let our fans get to know them — at least, briefly.
In this edition, Correspondent Brian Tortella spoke to Pitman High junior soccer goalie Joey Zubert. He’s is chasing 100 career saves, as he’s 13 away from the mark with four games remaining in the regular season. He has 48 through 13 games so far this campaign — good for nearly four per contest.
“Joey is one of those rare players who affects the game on every part of the field around him, even up to the front line, which is no small feat for a goalkeeper,” said Pitman coach Matt Newcomb. “Our team is lucky to have someone so talented and dependable as their last line of defense.”
Zubert and the Panthers have an 8-5-1 record this season heading into Tuesday night’s game at Schalick — and he most recently recorded his fifth shutout in a 5-0 victory over Penns Grove.

Question: What’s your favorite food?
Answer: Spaghetti/pasta. It’s run through my family for years. I’ve had it since I was a little kid. I can always depend on it, especially my mother’s, it’s the best.
Q: Do you have any animals? Which one is your favorite?
A: I have three dogs and they’re all German shepherds. I love all of them equally, they’re the best.
Q: Top three people dead or alive that you would love to have dinner with?
A: Eugene Reid— he’s an icon at Pitman. I can have a nice dinner with him. Michael Jordan— I mean, come on. He’s one of the best athletes of all time! You can’t go wrong with Michael Jordan. I want to know his past, too. Tiger Woods— he seems like a really interesting guy. He has an interesting past as well, so I would like to learn about him a little more.
Q: What do you think the most important job in the whole world is?
A: I think it has to be in the medical field. If you have something wrong with you or if you’re sick, (if not for them) you’d have no one to help you or possibly save your life.
Q: Are you adventurous?
A: I’d say I’m pretty adventurous. I make my way down to Ocean City a lot. Go there every summer, spend some time at the beach. I make my way down to Florida a lot, too, and I like to go to Disney down there and go on some vacations.
