Staff Report
Editor’s Note: This school year, the South Jersey Glory Days staff will be having some fun with some of the athletes we cover in the form of a new feature called “5 Questions.” The goal is to highlight some of the upperclassmen who don’t normally get a lot of press coverage and give them a chance to let our fans get to know them — at least, briefly.
In this edition, Correspondent Brian Tortella spoke to Pitman senior soccer defender Samantha Scutt three games into her final high school season:
You’re not going to see Sam Scutt score many goals this fall — because that’s not where the Pitman senior shines brightest.
Defensively though, she’s on a whole other level. The Shenandoah University (Va.) commit led the Panthers’ lockdown defense that earned 11 shutout victories in 2023 and compiled a 14-4 record.
“Sam has been a four-year defensive starter for us,” Panthers coach Carrie Schwank said. “She is calm and collected in the backfield and cool under pressure. She has speed, strength and skill that she utilizes as our last line of defense. She is a leader on and off the field, motivating and encouraging her team as a captain and leader. Overall, Sam is an amazing young lady and a crucial part of our team and success.”

Scutt and the Panthers have a 2-2 record through four games this season, and Scutt said she has high hopes to lead them to a deep playoff run:
Q: What’s the best class you’ve ever had at Pitman High, and why?
A: The best classes I have taken at Pitman were Anatomy with Mr. Cunningham and Spanish with Senorita Nichlos. Both classes have given me a great experience and an enjoyable education.
Q: If you were to go pro in another sport, which would you want it to be and why?
A: I would go pro in softball if I had to play another sport, I play softball in the spring and love to watch it and enjoy playing the game so much.
Q: Your dream vacation spot and why?
A: My dream vacation spot would be Hawaii. I have always wanted to travel, the beaches look amazing and it is overall very beautiful.
Q: Any books, movies, or music you have been into lately?
A: I haven’t recently read anything new or watched anything new, but I love country music and have been into Treaty Oak Revival for a bit now.
Q: Where do you see yourself in five years?
A: In five years, I hope to be just wrapping up college at Shenandoah University, and applying to physician’s assistant school.
