5 QUESTIONS with St. Joseph Academy field hockey senior Sophia Kenelia

This school year, the South Jersey Glory Days staff is having some fun with some of the athletes we cover in the form of a new feature called “5 Questions.” The goal is to highlight some of the upperclassmen who don’t normally get a lot of press coverage and give them a chance to let our fans get to know them — at least, briefly.

In this edition, Staff Writer Dave O’Sullivan talked with injured St. Joseph Academy field hockey senior Sophia Kenelia. She has missed most of the last two seasons of sports after tearing her left ACL during spring lacrosse as a sophomore, then tearing her right ACL in the spring as a junior.

“Sophia is a workhorse. She’s really strong and has great stick skills. It’s been a huge loss for us, especially her senior year,” said Wildcats coach Corinne Etter-Veight. “She tore her opposite ACL last year, so she’s been out her junior and senior year. She’s a kid who sets the tone, so not having her is hurting us.”

Yet Kenelia, a Millville resident, is out there every day with the field hockey team, keeping the scorebook and serving as sort of a team manager for Etter-Veight as she continues to rehab her injured knee.

“She’s that kid, no matter what, even if she’s down-and-out and can’t play, she’s here for her team,” Etter-Veight said. “She’s ride-or-die for her teammates, and me. She’s one of those kids I can rely on. When she was on the field and had the ball, as a coach you felt at ease. She really controlled the tempo. She’s fast and fierce, and we really miss her out there.”

5 QUESTIONS with St. Joseph Academy field hockey senior Sophia Kenelia:

QUESTION: Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?

ANSWER: Definitely my coach (Etter-Veight). She works me really hard and gets me in the right mindset. When it comes to school and sports, she keeps me on track. She’s one of the best role models for me.

Q: If you could visit a place outside of the United States, where would you like to go?

A: Italy.

Q: Are you the kind of person who would go skydiving?

A: Personally, I’m a crazy person, but I don’t think I’d go skydiving. I think I’d be too scared to do that.

Q: What is your favorite dessert?

A: My favorite is a chocolate milkshake, because it’s simple and tastes great.

Q: When you’re able to sleep in on the weekends, how late do you sleep?

A: Only about 10 a.m. My step-mom and my dad will not allow me to sleep later than that.
