Staff Report

Normally, South Jersey baseball fans would have to wait until the end of April to see some of the top teams in the area battle it out at Mainland Regional’s Coaches vs. Cancer showcase event. This year, it’s kicking off the season.

The event begins on Friday at Northfield’s Birch Grove Park, with Delsea taking on Cherry Hill East at 4 p.m., followed by one of the premier games of the 10-game showcase — Mainland hosting Clearview at 7 p.m.

The event, celebrating its 10th anniversary this season, was started by former Millville and current Mainland assistant Mike Edwards, along with current Millville head coach Roy Hallenbeck, who both had family members affected by cancer. In the decade since it’s launched, the event has raised more than $75,000 that has been donated to the American Cancer Society.

As is the case every year, this showcase features some of the best teams in South Jersey, and also some longstanding rivalries, such as Atlantic City vs. Bridgeton (Saturday, 9 a.m.) and St. Augustine Prep vs. Gloucester Catholic (Sunday, 2 p.m.). There are four games Saturday and four games Sunday, all scheduled to be played at Mainland Regional High School in Linwood.

Some of the big-name programs invited this year include Holy Spirit, Cherokee, Jackson Memorial — one of the top teams in the Shore Conference — Millville, Lenape, Kingsway, Washington Township and Bishop Eustace.
