WOOLWICH TOWNSHIP — Coming off a narrow 3-1 loss to undefeated Tri-County Conference rival Washington Township on Monday, the Kingsway boys soccer team needed a spark heading into Thursday’s “Senior Night” tilt vs Delsea.
Senior Logan Theodore provided such a spark with his game-winning goal with 5:11 left in regulation that broke a 1-1 tie and led the Dragons to a 2-1 victory over Delsea Regional.
“There’s nothing you can compare it to,” he said. “The energy, Senior Night, game-winning goal. It was great. We really needed it coming off that loss from (Washington) Township. It’s a great way to get the win streak going again, and I’m just really excited.”
Said Dragons coach Derrick Brewer: “What you saw from Logan at the end is what we expect from Logan. He’s hitting his potential there. Hopefully he can keep it going.”
Theodore’s goal was assisted by Pietro Pellegrini, a foreign exchange student from Italy, who came to Kingsway this summer and has since played a serviceable role for the Dragons with two goals so far this season.
“Pietro Pellegrini, our Italian,” said a smiling Theodore. “He came in this summer, moved right behind me, and I feel like there was a bond. New friend, you can’t beat that.”
Justin Lewis, also a senior, started the action for Kingsway in the 37th minute, scoring on a pass from Justin Sanchez. Jason Rose evened the score up for the Crusaders in the 66th minute.
“It was surreal,” Lewis said. “I called the target, saw the ball come through and I finished my chance. I’ve been praying for this, and I’m glad I got it started off today. It’s surreal to have everybody out here witness this. Delsea’s a great team. We just came off a hard loss against Washington Township. It feels good to get back on the winning side.”
“It’s a statement,” he continued. “No matter what happens to Kingsway, we’re always going to be there. We can compete with anybody. Honestly, I think we’re probably one of the better teams in the conference.”
Kingsway improved its record to 7-3-1 and is 3-1 in the Tri-County Royal. Delsea dropped to 7-3 but still sits atop the Tri-County Conference’s Liberty Division with a perfect 5-0 mark.
“This was exciting for Senior Night,” coach Brewer said. “Obviously, you want everything to go your way. Things got away from us for a couple minutes, but I’m happy the boys could turn it around and get that result.”
