Staff Report
Many times, looks can be deceiving.
Alex Daniel had the look of a menacing defensive lineman with his 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame, but on the basketball court he had the grace of a swan, dribbling effortlessly around smaller, quicker guards and lofting up left-handed jump shots with the softest of touches.
He really was fun to watch because he could play all five positions on the court. He was as good as most point guards at handling the ball, passing and shooting, and better than most big men at posting up and grabbing rebounds. He was a huge part of the success of Middle Township and Wildwood Catholic the last couple of years, playing in a Cape-Atlantic League Tournament championship game for each school.
His best year came when he was a junior at Wildwood Catholic, when he scored nearly 400 points and set career highs in every offensive category. He was just as good as a senior at Middle Township, pouring in 303 points, grabbing more than 100 rebounds and dishing out 75 assists.
For his career, Daniel finished with 1,297 points and nearly 700 rebounds to go along with 278 assists, 16 blocked shots and 57 steals in 108 career games played. This past winter, Daniel scored in double figures in 18-of-29 games, including putting up 25 points twice, in wins over Atlantic Tech and Vineland.
