Staff Report

Some athletes are just ready for high school varsity competition right from the get-go.

As soon as Madison Berry stepped on campus at Holy Spirit High in Absecon, it was clear she was going to be a star on the softball diamond. As a freshman she hit .350 and showed the ability to get on base and score runs, as she reached base in nearly half of her plate appearances. She had 14 hits, scored 15 runs, walked 12 times and stole eight bases.

And that was just a sneak peak at what was to come.

The skilled shortstop hit .508 as a sophomore, .500 as a junior and perhaps even more impressive, hit .465 as a senior when everybody knew what she could do. As a senior, she reached career highs in hits (33), RBIs (33), runs (24), doubles (10), extra-base hits (13), and for her career she hit .465 with 106 hits, 95 RBIs, eight home runs, 76 runs and 19 stolen bases.

She was the heart of Holy Spirit’s batting order and was rock solid defensively. Whoever plays shortstop for the Spartans next year has some big shoes to fill.
