Staff Report

The Camden Catholic High field hockey program is the gold standard for South Jersey, as the Irish have continually put together state championship-caliber teams. A big reason for that is senior leadership, and every year the Irish seem to have outstanding seniors who lead the way.

Last fall, it was Savannah Freeland’s turn to guide the squad, and she did so in exemplary fashion. She was second on the team in both goals (24) and assists (17) and was the engine that made the Irish offense go.

With Freeland leading the way, Camden Catholic won the South Jersey Tournament of Champions by beating outstanding teams such as Delsea Regional, West Deptford and Clearview Regional, and the Irish won another sectional title, this time besting upstart St. Joseph Academy, which had perhaps its best season ever.

The dream of a state championship fell short against powerful Oak Knoll Academy in the state title game, but the Irish still went 17-7 while facing one of the toughest schedules in the state.

Freeland finished her career with an impressive 77 goals, while also adding 36 assists. She had a goal or an assist in 16 games her senior year, including scoring at least three goals four times. For her efforts last fall she was named second-team All-State.
