Staff Report

The 2025 high school football season is in full swing and there are plenty of teams itching to unseat Winslow as the top school in South Jersey.

The Eagles — defending state champion — hang onto the top spot this week in the South Jersey Glory Days/South Jersey Football Frenzy Show Best 11 Rankings, but teams like St. Augustine Prep and Washington Township are breathing down Winslow’s neck. The Hermits won’t have to wait long to find out if they can claim the No. 1 spot, as they’ll host Winslow on Friday at 6 p.m. in a class of the best public vs. private schools in the region.

Here’s a look at where we stand heading into what is technically Week 3 (some team have played three games, as they played in Week Zero, prior to Labor Day Weekend).

11 — Mainland Regional (1-2): The Stangs fell by a point to Millville last week, but they have looked much better since a 25-8 thumping at the hands of Atlantic City in the Mid-Atlantic Pigskin Classic to open the season. Chuck Smith’s group is about to face a gauntlet, though, as they travel to Cherokee this week, then host St. Augustine Prep, then go across the 9th Street Bridge in Somers Point to face archrival Ocean City to start October. NEXT: at Cherokee, Friday, 6 p.m.

10 — Kingsway Regional (2-1): The Dragons are looking to keep pace with Washington Township in the West Jersey Football League Classic Division, and rebounded from their only loss with a nice win over Timber Creek last week. They face a banged up Delsea squad this week before a Thursday game on Sept. 25 against Camden Eastside. NEXT: vs. Delsea Regional on Friday at 6 p.m. (Brian Tortella coverage, on X @tortreports)

9 — Burlington Township (3-0): The Falcons have ripped off three straight 40-point performances, and their offense doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. Junior Aiden Binns is already nearly halfway to 1,000 yards in just three games. NEXT: vs. Moorestown on Friday at 6 p.m.

8 — Cherokee (2-1): The Chiefs don’t have a lot of time to lick their wounds coming off a 35-0 loss at the hands of No. 2 St. Augustine Prep. They have Mainland, Atlantic City and Shawnee coming up in successive weeks. These games should prove whether or not Cherokee can be a factor in the Group 5 state playoffs. NEXT: vs. Mainland on Friday at 6 p.m.

7 — Camden (2-1): The Panthers are coming off a 1-point loss against Shawnee, but this is a solid team. They scored an out-of-state win to start the season then came back to beat Kingsway, and they’ll have about three weeks to prove they belong in the rankings, as they take on Holy Spirit, Rancocas Valley and Winslow. Win 2-of-3 and Camden might be able to crack the top 5. NEXT: at Holy Spirit on Friday at 6 p.m. (Sully coverage, @GDsullysays on X)

6 — Atlantic City (2-1): It’s going to be a dogfight in the WJFL Constitution Division, and the Vikings are always up for the challenge. Watch out for sophomore QB Marvin Burroughs, he’s coming on strong. His attempts have steadily increased in the first three weeks and in last week’s loss to Cedar Creek he completed 23 passes for 282 yards and four TDs. NEXT: vs. Ocean City on Friday at 6 p.m.

5 — Glassboro (3-0): Can anybody on the schedule knock off the defending Group 1 state champions? Likely not, although the Bulldogs do face three straight road games starting this week. We’ll see how Timmy Breaker’s boys handle being road Warriors before returning home in mid-October. NEXT: at Salem on Saturday at noon.

4 — Washington Township (3-0): The Minutemen went to the South Jersey Group 5 championship game a year ago — and they might even be better this year. Andrew Osborn and Jaylen Robinson are full grown men, and QB Cole Aquino is throwing darts all over the field. Things are going so well for Township that senior kicker Luke Sheets is just blasting 46-yard field goals for giggles. NEXT: at Millville on Friday at 6 p.m.

3 — Rancocas Valley (3-0): The Red Devils have all kinds of talent, but haven’t necessarily been blowing other teams out of the water. Star senior quarterback Sayvien Adams has been banged up, as Malcolm Harrison threw for 95 yards and a touchdown in relief during last week’s win over Camden Eastside, and Adams’ health could be a concern going forward. Still, the Devils have some dudes on defense, so it’s going to be tough for opponents to score more than twice against them. NEXT: at Shawnee on Friday at 6 p.m.

2 — St. Augustine Prep (3-0): Do the boys in blue have what it takes to be No. 1? We’ll find out on Friday night! New running back Roman Coney has been carrying a huge chunk of the offense, but he might find gaining yards against Winslow’s front to be some tough sledding. NEXT: vs. Winslow on Friday at 6 p.m.

1 — Winslow (2-1): The defending state champs had their long winning streak come to an end against Bergen Catholic last week, but there’s no shame in that. The Crusaders are one of the best teams in the entire country. The Eagles are going to have to find a way to regroup quickly, as St. Augustine Prep looms this week.
