The Rutgers football team kicked off its 2021 season with a dominant win over visiting Temple University last weekend, and several former South Jersey stars had a hand in it.
Three former Cape-Atlantic League stars delivered impressive performances in last Saturday’s 61-14 win at SHI Stadium in Piscataway. Isiah Pacheco rushed for 48 yards and one touchdown while brothers Bo and Max Melton each scored touchdowns in the opening day romp.
Pacheco, a 5-foot-11, 215-pound junior, was a standout at Vineland High while the Meltons excelled at Cedar Creek in Egg Harbor City.
Bo Melton, a senior, totaled 59 receiving yards on six grabs — including a 40-yard score. Quarterback Noah Vedral connected with Melton on a short pass before the wideout turned on the afterburners and raced upfield.
Freshman Max Melton, a Scarlet Knights defensive back, followed suit by intercepting a Justin Lynch pass on the ensuing Owls possession and racing 46 yards to the house. It was the first defensive touchdown of his collegiate career.
Former Pleasantville standout, linebacker Mohamed Toure, also made an impact for Rutgers, totaling two tackles, including one for loss. The sophomore registered 4.5 sacks in 2020 and will be eager to follow up on his standout debut season in North Jersey.
The 61 points scored by Rutgers were the most in program history and now Greg Schiano’s team will travel to Syracuse University on Saturday. The Scarlet Knights return home on Sept. 18 for a showdown with the University of Delaware before opening Big Ten Conference play.
