Staff Report
We’re starting to inch closer and closer to the state playoffs, and this is the time of year when teams want to be playing their best.
Glassboro has been dominating all season, and although the Bulldogs have — gasp! — given up points the last two weeks, they still have a very good shot at finishing the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record. Standing in their way is Woodstown, another undefeated team, and this winner of this game takes home the West Jersey Football League Diamond Division championship.
This game has been evenly matched the last couple of years, with each team scoring two wins in the last four meetings.
Then again, the Bulldogs didn’t have running back Kenny Smith last year, as he was suiting up for Hammonton. The senior transfer has been one of the best running backs in South Jersey history with more than 4,000 career yards, and he’s just two touchdowns shy of 50 for his career.
This game might be over in about 45 minutes, as both teams love to run the ball. Woodstown has less than 600 passing yards all season, but the Wolverines have rushed for nearly 1,200 yards and 13 touchdowns. They typically don’t score a ton, having notched more than 28 points just once all season, so they’d love this game to be a low-scoring, ball control type of affair. The longer they can keep No. 3 in maroon-and-gold on the sidelines, the better off they’ll be.

KEY GAMES
Millville at St. Augustine Prep: The Hermits have dropped two of their last three games, including a 20-14 setback at RV last weekend, so they need to get right before the playoffs start. That won’t be easy against a Millville team that has been one of the best in South Jersey all year long, save for that one lopsided loss against No. 1 Winslow. Look for the Hermits to try to run the ball as much as possible to keep Millville’s offense off the field.
Washington Township at Timber Creek: The Minutemen can wrap up a WJFL Classic Division title with a win tonight, but it’s never easy to get a W in Sicklerville. Which Township team will show up? The one that rushed for more than 250 yards in last week’s win over Kingsway, or the one that looked listless in a 27-0 loss to RV the week before? If Township wants to make a run in the Group 5 playoffs, they need it to be the former.
Haddonfield at Paul VI: The host Eagles can wrap up an undefeated divisional record with a win tonight, but the Haddons traditionally are a tough team to beat, no matter what their record is. PVI is 4-1 in its last five games and junior Daulton Phalines has completed 72 passes for nearly 1,200 yards and nine touchdowns against just two picks. Should be a good night to throw the ball, so Haddonfield’s secondary better be on their toes.
