Football: WJFL releases abbreviated 2020 schedule; top CAL teams facing tough competition

The West Jersey Football League has released its shortened 2020 schedule, according to several South Jersey media outlets, and some of the top teams in Atlantic, Cape May and Cumberland counties have some serious challenges in their six games.
Holy Spirit, coming off a Non-Public Group 2 state championship, will face stalwarts such as Cedar Creek, St. Joseph-Hammonton (the team they beat in the state title game), Pleasantville, Vineland and St. Augustine Prep, and Cedar Creek and Ocean City have equally tough schedules. The Red Raiders, who made it to a sectional championship game last fall, must face Cedar Creek, Mainland Regional and Pleasantville in its final three games, while Cedar Creek’s entire schedule will test the Pirates. They start out with Pleasantville and Holy Spirit, and that’s followed by Ocean City, Buena Regional, St. Joseph and then Hammonton.

Mainland, coming off back-to-back 9-1 seasons, takes on the likes of EHT, Ocean City, Pleasantville, Prep and Vineland, as well as Absegami, which is now coached by former Pleasantville skipper Chris Sacco, who led the Greyhounds to a Central Jersey Group 2 semifinal appearance last season.
Millville has to run an absolute gauntlet. Check out this schedule: Hammonton, St. Augustine, St. Joseph, Ocean City, a bye, then Williamstown and Vineland to close it out. St. Augustine has a great schedule, too, as the Hermits take on Vineland, Millville, Hammonton, Mainland, Williamstown and Holy Spirit — all playoff caliber squads.

Atlantic City: Oakcrest, at EHT, at Bridgeton, Hammonton, bye, Absegami, at Holy Spirit.
Bridgeton: Buena, at Cumberland, Atlantic City, at EHT, at Lower Cape May, Middle Township.
Buena: At Bridgeton, Woodstown, at Oakcrest, Cedar Creek, Pleasantville, at Schalick.
Cedar Creek: At Pleasantville, Holy Spirit, Ocean City, at Buena, at St. Joe, Hammonton.
