When it comes to any statistical category in any high school sport, 520 is a pretty big number to reach in just four years. For West Deptford’s Madison Warlow, it could take her just three years to reach that mark and become the girls lacrosse program’s all-time leader in career saves.
Warlow has had the number 520 on her mind ever since she stepped onto the varsity lacrosse field as a sophomore in 2022. She tallied 12 saves in her first career game two years ago. She ended her sophomore campaign with 134 saves in 15 games.
With varsity experience under her belt, she turned it up a notch the following season, finishing with 182 saves — 48 more than the prior season.
Just one game into her final season with an opportunity to make history, Warlow now stands 191 saves away from surpassing 2014 graduate Alyssa Sorrentino for the program’s career mark.
“It’s a really big goal of mine that I would like to achieve,” Warlow said. “I love to go out and play with my team, and it’s something that’s in the back of my mind. Alyssa Sorrentino is one of our coaches and we talk about it a lot.”
Warlow added another 13 saves for West Deptford in their season-opening, 10-7 loss to Colonial Conference foe Haddon Township on Monday. Kenzi Ricci led the Hawks with four goals and two assists, while Amelia Tomashek added a pair of goals. Maddie Eastlack and Riley Walsh each tallied three goals for West Deptford.
While another 191 saves this season is certainly no small feat — and would be a single-season career high for Warlow — West Deptford coach Christine Stetson is confident that she’ll be able to break the record.
“Madison is a critical member of our team for many reasons,” Stetson said. “She was voted by her teammates as a team captain, she is our vocal leader on defense, and she clearly loves this sport. I am fortunate to have coached her in two sports and her approach to this game is truly something special. I know that she has big goals this season, both individually and for the team, and I am confident that she will be a huge factor in any successes we have this year.”
Last year, the Eagles posted a 12-5 record and advanced to the South Jersey Group 1 semifinals before a loss to Glen Ridge, and two years ago they were 15-7, falling short against Haddonfield in the sectional championship game.
Warlow said she is committed to Widener University, where she’ll look to continue her impressive saves for the Pride. She plans to major in nursing, she said.
“We are extremely excited to welcome Madison to our program,” said Widener coach Sophie Bass. “Madison has a great work ethic and a strong passion for the game, which will no doubt have a positive impact on our team’s success. We can’t wait to see her in action next year and watch her continue to develop and excel on the field.”
What’s next: West Deptford travels to Kingsway on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Haddon Township travels to Cedar Creek on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
