(South Jersey Glory Days’ new feature, “Keep an eye on”, aims to give fans a quick look at an athlete who has impressed our staff with their potential in a small sample size. We want to recognize things that don’t necessarily show up in the box score, such as knowledge of the game, hustle, athletic ability, being coachable, etc. These are athletes we think are capable of doing some good things for their respective team on the varsity level. If you know an athlete we should keep our eye on, reach out to us on social media or email sullyglorydays@gmail.com.)
Staff Report
Egg Harbor Township dominated rival Mainland Regional in the boys basketball season opener, winning 78-54, but there were a couple of bright spots for the Mustangs, who are fielding an entirely new starting five this season.
The Stangs have a pretty good looking young center in Griffin Fitzgerald. The lanky junior had just three varsity appearances and eight career points coming into this season, but he more than doubled that against the Eagles, going for a team-high 20 points.
He showed some pretty nifty moves around the basket and was an aggressive rebounder, and with his size he certainly kept the Eagles out of the paint. (Unfortunately for Mainland, EHT nailed 14 three-pointers!). Fitzgerald also showed the ability to convert from the free-throw line with a soft touch on his shots.
It’s going to be interesting to see what he can develop into with more varsity experience, but so far he’s off to a pretty good start as a new varsity starter for the Stangs.
