The St. Joseph Academy softball team has had some big stars the past couple of years. The likes of Ava Fisher,  standout pitcher; Macie Jacquet, a tough-as-nails catcher who hit nearly .400 as a senior two years ago while leading the Wildcats to a state championship; Katie Dainton, who scored 60 runs as a senior in 2022.

Not many people know the name Isabella Ramos, but softball fans in the Cape-Atlantic League are likely to start hearing more about the scrappy second baseman as this season wears on.

The junior is one of the best defensive middle infielders in the league, and although she’s gotten off to a little bit of a slow start in terms of batting average, she’s still doing a lot for the Wildcats’ offense. She’s getting on base (seven walks and two hit-by-pitch) and scoring runs, as she’s averaging nearly a run scored per game.

She’s been a three-year varsity player and has scored 40 runs in her career while also adding 30 walks, 18 RBIs and eight stolen bases. Wildcats coach Les Olson said he expects Ramos to be a cornerstone of the infield for the next two years, especially with the left side of shortstop Brooke Tyndale and third baseman Abby Willis both graduating after this season.

“Defensively she’s really good. She makes a tremendous amount of plays over there at second base. We have some faster pitching, so it’s good to have somebody like her on that side of the field,” Olson said after his Wildcats beat Ocean City, 10-1, on Tuesday. “She’s been doing well at the plate as far as her discipline. She just has to keep working on getting those hands up and getting the ball down. She’s a junior, and she’s solid for us.”
