South Jersey Glory Days Correspondent Brian Tortella recently chatted with Walter “Bump” Carter, a three-sport athlete at Woodstown Highl. He made a significant impact on the varsity football and wrestling teams and just started the lacrosse season.

Get to know a little about “Bump” in this Q&A:

Tortella: What is your favorite sport to play and why?

Bump: I would say my favorite sport is football because it was my first sport that I started when I was little, and I just love the contact.

Tortella: You’ve been a consistent contributor to the WHS varsity football team over the last three seasons. What was it like being a part of such a winning culture and hoisting two sectional titles?

Bump: I feel like it was a great honor to make history in Woodstown and to be one of the first ones to do it as well.

Tortella: Describe your most memorable moment/play/game from your high school career (any sport).

Bump: The most memorable game would be (the 2023) sectional game or the game against Woodbury, when I scored.

Tortella: Who was your biggest inspiration, or someone you looked up to, growing up?

Bump: It would have to be my mom, who I’ve always looked up to.

Tortella: What do you like most about your coaches at Woodstown?

Bump: I like connection we have with the coaches and that we can joke around but also lock in when needed.

Tortella: Are there any hobbies you have away from sports during your free time?

Bump: Not a lot of hobbies really, just either lifting or chilling.

Tortella: What do you believe is the greatest challenge most high school athletes are facing today?

Bump: I believe most athletes are unsure about where they want to go (after graduation).

Tortella: What do you like most about Woodstown High?

Bump: I like the environment that we have together.

Tortella: Why does everyone call you “Bump?”

Bump: I got the name “Bump” from my grandmom, and it just carried out to sports and school.

Tortella: Who was your favorite professional athlete growing up and why?

Bump: I never really had a favorite, to be honest. I liked watching mainly defensive linemen.

Tortella: What’s your go-to snack food?

Bump: I would say munchies.

Tortella: If someone gave you a plane ticket to go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

Bump: I would want to go back to California.

Tortella: What would you tell your freshman self if you could go back to your first day of high school and give him some advice?

Bump: To enjoy every moment in every sport and to keep lifting.

Tortella: Who’s your best sports friend?

Bump: It would have to be Braiden Gould.

Tortella: Favorite artist and song?

Bump: Favorite artist is Kendrick Lamar, and song would be “Rigamortus.”

Tortella: What do you see yourself accomplishing in the next five to 10 years?

Bump: I see myself getting a good degree and hopefully having a good paying job.

Tortella: If you could pick three people to have dinner with (alive or dead), who would you choose?

Bump: My late, great grandpop, (former NFL defensive lineman) Aaron Donald and Snoop Dogg.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Woodstown boys lacrosse team is 1-3 so far. The Wolverines host Cinnaminson on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Carter, a senior defenseman, has one assist and 11 gound balls so far this season.
