Staff Report
Winning 20 games in a high school basketball season takes a lot of contributions from players up and down a coach’s roster.
The Holy Spirit girls went 20-10 this season and made it to the Cape-Atlantic League Tournament championship game in part because the Spartans had some great leadership with the likes of Sabrina Little, Kieran Brewster and Ava Catona — the latter of whom probably didn’t get the recognition she deserved as being an integral part of Scott Meile’s first year at the helm.
Catona wasn’t a prolific scorer, averaging just fewer than five points per game, but she played an equally important role as being a secondary ball handler and a solid defender on the perimeter. She was durable, playing in all 30 games, and finished with 65 rebounds and 57 steals.
There were only four games all season in which she didn’t score, and she scored in double figures three times, including a season-high 17 in a huge win over Wildwood Catholic in the league semifinals. Four of her 26 three-pointers this season came in that game, a 58-54 win over the Crusaders.
Catona was great from the foul line, too, missing just six shots this season and only 11 in her career. She finished with more than 300 points and more than 100 rebounds while adding 98 steals in 87 career games spread of four varsity seasons.
