Staff Report

In order to be a competitive softball team, you have to have a solid catcher. That’s exactly what the Sterling Silver Knights have had the last couple of years in Riley Huber.

A very solid catcher who can also play outfield, Huber quietly had a really nice career in Somerdale. A three-year starter, Huber was one of the main reasons Sterling was able to stay competitive in a tough Colonial Liberty division that features small-school powerhouses such as Gloucester and Haddon Heights, as well as teams like Audubon, Haddon Township and West Deptford — all state playoff qualifiers.

Huber burst onto the scene as a sophomore, hitting .329 with 23 hits, 13 runs scored, 15 RBIs, 10 doubles and five stolen bases, and she was even better as a senior. This season, Huber was second on the team in hitting with a .371 average, as she cranked out six doubles, two home runs and 20 RBIs.

Huber will graduate as one of the top players in the program, finishing with a .330 average in nearly 200 at-bats. She had 59 hits, 41 RBIs, 17 doubles, four home runs, 23 walks and 13 steals. There were only six games this season when Huber didn’t record a hit, and only three games in which she didn’t reach base at least once. Her best game came in a 13-4 win over Collingswood in early May, when Huber went 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, a run scored and a season-high four RBIs.

In all, Huber was an on-base machine, reaching base nearly 90 times in three seasons for the Knights, and she led the team to 31 wins during the last three years.
