Staff Report

Taylor Vaugh isn’t the rah-rah type of softball player. Ocean City’s senior second baseman, in fact, barely makes a peep out on the field.

But she doesn’t have to say much, she lets her play do the talking. If Vaugh ever comes home after a game with a clean uniform, that’s a rarity. She’s scrappy, always hustling, always looking to take the extra base.

Vaugh helps solidify the Red Raiders’ infield and also is a sparkplug at the top of Ocean City’s batting order. She’s helped Ocean City get off to a 7-4 start by hitting .346 with 17 runs scored and 15 walks. She has a nearly .600 on-base percentage — not too shabby for a leadoff hitter!

Vaugh doesn’t get mentioned a lot in connection with Ocean City’s recent success, but her contributions can’t go unreported. The blond-haired dynamo has had nearly 300 at-bats during her four-year varsity career and is hitting close to .300 with 80 hits, 87 runs, 33 RBIs, 47 walks and 43 stolen bases.

Ocean City (7-4, 5-2) is currently just a game behind Vineland (6-1, 5-0) in the Cape-Atlantic League American Conference, and with Vaugh leading the way the Red Raiders won 17 games a year ago, including trips to the CAL and state tournaments. Vaugh has been a part of 49 wins so far during her career, and helped turn around a team that went 5-15 when she was a freshman. During her sophomore and junior campaigns, the Red Raiders won 37 games.
