Staff Report
Mainland Regional High seems to crank out high level athletes season after season, year after year. It’s one of those schools that is good at nearly every sport — in every season — and the competitiveness that comes along with success builds athletes into the best versions of themselves.
Ava Sheeran is the latest in a long line of outstanding female athletes the school has produced, and she’s graduating with a ton of accolades plus a state championship ring. Sheeran — the younger sister of former Mainland baseball standout Joe Sheeran — was a key member of the Mustangs’ girls basketball team that won a Group 3 state championship in 2024, and this year, as a senior concentrating on lacrosse, all she did was lead the team with 59 goals while adding 14 assists and 71 ground balls.
Sheeran, a Northfield resident who is planning to play lacrosse at West Chester University, finished her career with an impressive 164 goals to go along with 39 assists. She also had nearly 300 draw controls in her four varsity seasons.
As a junior, she as a Press of Atlantic City honorable mention all-star in basketball, and in lacrosse she was Press of AC First Team, a three-time all-Cape-Atlantic League First Team selection, and was named one of the state’s top 100 players by nj.com.
Sheeran also was active in school, as she was involved with Peers and Unified Sports at Mainland, mentoring students with disabilities in the classroom and in various sports. She’ll be heading to West Chester on a partial athletic scholarship.
