Staff Report

Any high school baseball coach will tell you, the more a player can do on the field, the more valuable he becomes.

Senior Bernie Hargadon was one of those guys that Holy Spirit coach Steve Normane could put anywhere on the field and not have to worry about plays getting made. He also knew he could plug him into the middle of the lineup and expect to get consistent production at the plate.

Hargadon, who played multiple infield and outfield positions during his career as a Spartan, had a breakout senior year, helping lead Spirit to 14 wins and a second-place finish in the Cape-Atlantic League’s National Conference.

He hit a career-best .484, going 30-for-62, and added 23 runs scored, 17 RBIs, five doubles, 13 walks and 13 stolen bases. He led the team in hits, was tied for first in RBIs with Ty Costabile, and finished second to Jack Murray in runs scored. He also tied with Gavin Cohen for the team lead in doubles and was third in walks and second in steals.

All this from a player who hit just .214 as a sophomore. As a junior, however, he started to turn things around, hitting .265 with 14 runs scored and 14 walks. For his career, Hargadon ended up hitting .309 with 64 hits, 50 runs scored, 29 RBIs, 11 doubles, 45 walks and 22 stolen bases.
