Staff Report

If you haven’t been paying attention to the South Jersey South Shore Baseball League in the last week or so, there’s a lot going on.

The league — now in its second season — begins its eight-team playoffs on Monday, but who will be playing who, and where, is yet to be determined in a lot of circumstances. There’s a whole lot that can happen between now and Monday night.

The team features 11 teams, 10 of which make the playoffs. The No. 7 team plays the No. 10 team and Nos. 8 and 9 square off in the “play-in” round, and the survivors of those two games earn the Nos. 7 and 8 seeds, much like in the new NBA playoff format.

Tonight there is a winner-takes-all matchup at Somers Point’s Fehrle Field at 7 p.m. between the host Captains (3-16) and Egg Harbor City Knights (3-14) to see who will grab the No. 10 seed. That winner plays No. 7 Ocean City Water Dogs at 7 p.m. Friday for the right to enter the playoffs. The Galloway Mustangs are locked into the No. 9 seed and they’ll take on No. 8 Egg Harbor Township Eagles tonight during the play-in round. The winner of that game meets the No. 1 and defending league champion South Jersey Surf at Northfield’s Birch Grove Park on Monday at 7 p.m. to start a best-of-3 quarterfinal round series.

Confused yet? Here’s a quick rundown of each of the 11 teams and what’s ahead of them:

South Jersey Surf: Locked into the No. 1 seed, the Surf will host either Galloway or EHT on Monday to start a best-of-3 quarterfinals series.

Buena Blue Dawgs: Must beat Absecon tonight to get the No. 2 seed, otherwise the Dawgs are No. 3.

Absecon Outlaws: Same scenario — beat Buena and they are the No. 2 seed, lose and they are the No. 3 seed.

Northfield Cardinals: Set at the No. 4 seed, they’ll play either Ventnor or Hammonton in the quarterfinals.

Ventnor Bay Sox: The Sox take on the Surf in a doubleheader tonight. With one win, they are the No. 5 seed. If the Surf sweep the doubleheader, Ventnor gets the No. 6 seed.

Hammonton Hot Shots: If Ventnor gets swept and Hammonton beats Ocean City, the Hot Shots get the No. 5 seed based on its wins vs. the top four teams in the league.

Ocean City Water Dogs: Locked in at the No. 7 seed, will host either Somers Point or Egg Harbor City on Friday night in the play-in round.

EHT/Galloway: Locked in as the Nos. 8 and 9 teams respectively, they play tonight to determine who will advance to Monday’s quarterfinals.

Somers Point/Egg Harbor City: Play tonight; one team is moving on to the play-in round, the season is over for the loser of this game.

Current standings: 1. South Jersey Surf (16-2). 2. Buena Blue Dawgs (14-6). 3. Absecon Outlaws (13-7). 4. Northfield Cardinals (13-8). 5. Ventnor Bay Sox (11-8). 6. Hammonton Hot Shots (10-10). 7.
