St. Joseph at Holy Spirit, Sept. 20, 7 p.m.: The Wildcats travel to Absecon to face the rival Spartans one week into the season in what may be the game of the year. The private schools are expected to be among the best teams in South Jersey and repeat as state champions. 2. Egg Harbor Township at Hammonton, Sept. 27, 7 p.m.: Both teams seem to be perennial contenders. However, the Blue Devils are coming off a 5-5 season, below their standards. One of the losses came after losing a second-half lead to the Eagles. 3. Absegami at Holy Spirit, Oct. 11: This is another installment in what is a budding rivalry. The schools are too close to each other not to be rivals. 4. Holy Spirit at Mainland, Oct. 14, 7 p.m.: This matchup traditionally has been one of the best rivalries in the CAL. The Spartans have the edge, but they bring the best out of the Mustangs. 5. Atlantic City at St. Joseph, Oct. 26, noon: Big meets small. However, St. Joseph is not the usual “small school” when it comes to football. The Vikings always seem to feature a hard-hitting defense and explosive offense. 6. Absegami at Atlantic City, Nov. 8, 7 p.m.: Two Group IV schools and another rivalry. Both teams feature a host of athletes. Both defenses have a tough task ahead of them. 7. Oakcrest at Absegami, Nov. 28, 10 a.m.: The sister schools look forward to this meeting all season long, as do alumni. 8. Atlantic City vs. Holy Spirit, Nov. 28, 10 a.m.: This rivalry dates back to when both schools called Atlantic City home, and it is still intense decades later. 9. Vineland at Millville, No. 28, 10:30 a.m.: One of the oldest rivalries in the nation. This game defines the season for each school. 10. Hammonton at St. Joseph, Nov. 30, noon: Is this the last meeting between the cross-town rivals? Hammonton moves to the West Jersey League in 2014. — Giuseppe Ungaro
