Staff Report

It’s getting down to put-up-or-shut-up time in South Jersey soccer and field hockey tournaments, as we’re into the semis and finals of tournaments like the Cape-Atlantic League and South Jersey Coaches Cup.

In girls soccer, Eastern Regional has been on an absolute tear since a 1-0 loss to Shawnee in late September. That was the Vikings’ only loss, and since then they’ve gone unbeaten in 11 straight games, including a PK shootout win over Shawnee in the Coaches Cup semis. Eastern, the No. 2 seed, will take on No. 5 Sterling, which used three second-half goals earlier this week to knock off top-seeded Ocean City, 3-2. That title game takes place on Saturday at 6 p.m. at DeCou Fields in Cherry Hill.

Here’s a quick look at what’s happening in various tournaments to get you up to date as of Friday morning:

GIRLS SOCCER

South Jersey Coaches Cup: Eastern and Sterling battle for the championship on Saturday at 6 p.m. Sterling is undefeated (15-0-2) and has won nine straight games since a 1-1 tie against Rancocas Valley in late September.

Cape-Atlantic League Tournament: Top-seeded Ocean City rebounded from Wednesday night’s loss against Sterling to take down No. 5 Holy Spirit, 2-0, in Thursday’s semifinal round. The Red Raiders will host No. 3 Egg Harbor Township on Monday for the championship. EHT knocked off No. 2 Lower Cape May, 4-0, on Wednesday to reach the title game.

BOYS SOCCER

South Jersey Coaches Cup: No. 5 Clearview racked up six goals in the semis to end No. 16 Lenape’s Cinderella run through the top bracket. The Pioneers will take on No. 2 Washington Township, which rolled through its half of the bracket, outscoring opponents 12-2. The title game is set for Saturday at 6 p.m. at DeCou Fields in Cherry Hill.

Cape-Atlantic League Tournament: Top-seeded St. Augustine Prep, as expected, cruised into the championship game with a 4-0 win over EHT in the semis. The Hermits will host No. 3 Mainland on Monday, time TBD. The Stangs took down No. 2 Cedar Creek in a PK shootout to reach the championship game after a 1-1 tie through regulation and overtime.

FIELD HOCKEY

Cape-Atlantic League Tournament: The semifinal matchups are set for today, as top-seeded Hammonton hosts rival and No. 5 seed St. Joseph Academy at 3:30 p.m. On the other side of the bracket, No. 2 Ocean City plays host to No. 3 OLMA under the lights at 6 p.m. at Carey Stadium. Ocean City is the defending champion, having beaten Hammonton last fall.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL:

Cape-Atlantic League Tournament: The finals are set for Monday, as No. 2 Pleasantville hosts No. 4 Atlantic Tech, which took down top-seeded Mainland in the semifinals. Pleasantville is riding a nine-game winning streak, it’s last loss coming against Mainland in late September.

Gloucester County Tournament: Top-seeded Williamstown, one of the best teams in the state, rolled to the title, taking down GCIT and Washington Township, both with 2-0 scores. In the championship game, Gab Titus had a match-high 12 kills and Cassie Guim added 16 assists.
