It’s not often that the Avalon Limo Drive of the Game comes from a team that found itself on the losing end of a close score, but on Friday night — in horrendous weather conditions — Egg Harbor Township put together an impressive drive to give itself a chance to send its game against Absegami into overtime. After a special teams error by the Eagles allowed the Braves to set up shop inside the EHT 10-yard line, the Eagles’ defense did its job by stuffing three straight rushing attempts by the Braves. However, Zach Sterr, Absegami’s sophomore place kicker, calmly nailed a 24-yard field goal to put the Braves ahead 10-7 with just more than a minute remaining.
EHT quarterback David Rice hooked up with Amon Rolls on a long pass play in the waning seconds that gave the Eagles a shot at a game-tying field goal in their 10-7 loss to Absegami on Friday night. (Glory Days Magazine photo/Dave O’Sullivan) Egg Harbor Township got the ball around midfield, but it’s prospects of tying the game were still pretty slim. The Eagles had to gain at least 40 yards to give themselves a reasonable chance at a potential game-tying field goal, and faced several hurdles. First, they were low on time, and timeouts. Second, the weather presented a huge obstacle, with sideways rain and wind in the face of quarterback David Rice. Third, the Absegami defense had held EHT in check for much of the game, aside from a long touchdown pass from Rice to Spencer LaSure in the first quarter. A quick pass to tight end Seth Wagner — and Wagner’s ability to make a man miss — got the Eagles a first down, and then Rice stood in the pocket against some intense Absegami pressure and delivered a long pass down the middle that Amon Rolls somehow hauled in around the 3-yard line. The Eagles, without a timeout, hustled up to the line of scrimmage and Rice spiked the ball with 2.8 seconds remaining. That set the Eagles up for a field goal, and although the try wasn’t successful and Absegami hung on for a 10-7 win, the drive to give EHT a chance to tie the game was pretty impressive. — Dave O’Sullivan [adrotate banner=”30″]
