From staff reports EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — The Holy Spirit High School baseball team spent last spring making comebacks on their way to winning the Non-Public B state championship. But on Monday night at Kingpin Bowling & Entertainment Center, the Spartans’ comeback bid fell just short, as Glory Days Magazine remained undefeated in the Kingpin-Glory Days Bowling Challenge. The third installment of the monthly challenge, which features staff members from Glory Days Magazine taking on players and coaches from local high school sports teams, saw an intense battle for second place. Glory Days Director of Advertising, Bill Lynskey, ran away with high game and high series (177/444), but Publisher Dave O’Sullivan was locked in a heated race for second place with Spartans assistant coach Mike Buccafurni and junior Dom Boselli. Boselli came out strong, rolling a 125 in the opening of the three-game set to trail Sully by just four pins heading into Game Two. Buccafurni struggled a bit in the first game, scoring a 91, but lit it up in Game Two with a 147, the highest Game Two score of any of the nine contestants. Pitching coach Jason Downey rolled a 108 and a 91 in the first two games, but duty called as he had to return home early to help take care of his new baby.

Holy Spirit head coach Steve Normane was all about power early on, starting out with a strike and a score of 111 in his first game. He switched to a spinning style in the second game and that seemed to boost his confidence. He was consistent throughout, rolling 111-105-111 to finish with a 327 series. Downey finished with a 285 as his players divided up the turns in his final game. They did a respectable job, too, racking up a 91. Lynskey set a season strike record with nine in his three games. Boselli finished second with six strikes, while Knox and Sully each picked up five. Coach Buccafurni finished with four strikes, including three in his final game as he made a stirring comeback attempt in an effort to grab second place. Of the three teams who have competed so far — Egg Harbor Township baseball, Mainland Regional field hockey and Holy Spirit baseball — no coach or player has yet defeated either Lynskey or Sully in a series score.
