By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher OCEAN CITY — As Marquel Bridgers was pulling his coat on to head to the bus outside of the gym at Ocean City High School on Saturday afternoon, he looked as though he was ready for a four-hour nap. If he and his Pleasantville teammates decided to hit the couch for a snooze, it would be a well-deserved one. Bridgers and Malik Morgan each scored 18 points as Pleasantville managed to get past the host Red Raiders, 77-74, in overtime in a game that’s pace left both teams weary by the end. The Greyhounds had their hands full with Ocean City standout Connor Laverty, who scored a game-high 31 points in the loss. “I’m really tired. We knew it was going to be a rough game, but our schedule this year has been nothing but tough games, so we tried to treat it like any other game,” Bridgers said. “It’s a Saturday, so everybody is a little bit tired. But we overcame it and got the win.” “Ocean City, we always play good, tough games against them. They are a very disciplined team and they play hard, so we had to match their intensity, which we did for the most part,” said Pleasantville coach Ken Johnson. “Any game against a team that is that good on the interior is going to be tough for us, but we make up for (lack of height) by getting five guys to the glass and fighting for everything.” Kenny Allen and the Pleasantville Greyhounds improved to 5-2 with a 77-74 overtime win over the Red Raiders. Kenny Allen and the Pleasantville Greyhounds improved to 5-2 with a 77-74 overtime win over the Red Raiders. “Kenny made some shots in the first half and we told him to keep shooting the ball. We need him to be a shooting guard sometimes, and sometimes we need him to bring the ball up. The nice thing about him is, he knocks down foul shots,” Johnson said. Noah Gillian had a strong game for Ocean City, finishing with 20 points, and Luciano Keyes came off the bench and added six points for the Red Raiders. Spencer finished with 10 for the Greyhounds while Luna added nine. “We just had to be smart with the ball, try not to make turnovers. We’re just trying to stay humble and stay the course,” Morgan said. “It was a tough matchup. They got a lot of rebounds, but as a team we’re learning how to get through that and fix what needs patching up.” “These guys are confident, but my thing is to not get over-confident. Stay confident and believe in yourselves, and that’s what they are doing,” Johnson said. “They are starting to believe in each other more and more, which we’re going to need Monday night (against Wildwood Catholic).” Pleasantville travels to Wildwood Catholic on Monday night at 7 with first place in the Cape-Atlantic League’s United Conference on the line. Both teams are 3-0 in conference play, and the Crusaders are 7-1 overall and leading the CAL in points per game. Contact Dave O’Sullivan: sully@acglorydays.com; on Twitter @GDsullysays [adsense]
