Normally, Glory Days Magazine selects and individual player for its Bunting Family Pharmacy Athlete of the Week, but for last week we couldn’t ignore the efforts of the Absegami football team’s special teams unit. The Egg Harbor Township defense was able to hold Absegami’s offense off the scoreboard during a torrential rain storm that featured high winds, but the Braves came through on special teams to come away with a key 10-7 road victory over the Eagles on Friday night.

(Glory Days Magazine photo/Dave O’Sullivan) The Eagles struck first, scoring a touchdown in the first quarter on a long pass play from quarterback David Rice to wide receiver Spencer LaSure. Absegami trailed 7-0 through much of the first half, until late in the second quarter special teams came up with the play that changed the game around. Austin Shiner broke through the line and blocked a punt deep in Egg Harbor Township territory, and Quientin Jennings was there to scoop up the loose ball and scamper untouched into the end zone. Placekicker Zach Sterr added the extra point to tie the game, 7-7. The score remained 7-7 until there were less than three minutes left in the game. Absegami’s defense came up with a big spot, pinning the Eagles inside their own 20-yard line. Forced to punt again, the snap was mishandled, giving the Braves possession inside the EHT 10-yard line. EHT’s defense came up with a stand of its own, stopping three straight running plays. But Sterr stepped in and calmly drilled a 24-yard field goal that ultimately allowed Absegami to come away with a 3-point victory and improve to 2-1 on the year.
