By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher EGG HARBOR CITY — Coach Wayne Nelson and his Cedar Creek basketball players fielded congratulations and pats on the back for more than 20 minutes on Monday night after the Pirates’ game against Pleasantville. And why not? It’s not every day a program records a historic victory. The host Pirates, the No. 8 seed in the South Jersey Group 2 tournament, held off a scrappy Greyhounds squad 62-59 to notch the first postseason victory in school history. “It feels great. I’m more happy for the seniors, the guys who have been here four years, been to the states and haven’t won. This is for them. They get a chance to leave their legacy, so I’m very happy for them,” Nelson said. The teams were familiar with each other, having played twice already this season, so there was no real mystery about what each team wanted to do. It was a matter of who could do it better.
Pleasantville’s Cha’Quan Hargrose hits a layup for two of his 14 points against Cedar Creek. The Greyhounds (12-13) got a huge performance out of Marquell Bridges, who led all scorers with 21 points, including three 3-pointers, while Cha’Quan Hargrose added 14 points. Cedar Creek was led by Davis, who scored 19 points and went 8-of-9 from the foul line. Lavelle Davis added 15 points and Isaiah Watson scored 13 and was a monster on the boards for the Pirates. Nelson said he’s been waiting all year for a performance like that from his sophomore forward. “He picked a great game to show up,” Nelson said. “He’s young, just a sophomore. We got on him a lot this year, trying to bring that animal out of him, and I’m glad it came out tonight.” Nelson is in his first year at the helm at Cedar Creek. An accomplished basketball player himself, he said he had high expectations for this season, but with a lot of new faces in the lineup and a new head coach, he said he wasn’t sure how it was all going to come together. “I came in here and didn’t know really what to expect,” Nelson said. “Of course, my expectations are very high, and for them to go out and execute and win, I can’t be more proud of my kids.” Contact Dave O’Sullivan: sully@acglorydays.com; on Twitter @GDsullysays [adsense]
