OCEAN CITY —

Bill Kroeger was giving Egg Harbor Township’s Dan Wollermann fits during their 160-pound bout on Tuesday night at Ocean City High School. Wollermann held just a 1-0 lead heading into the third period and couldn’t get anything going offensively against Kroeger. But in the first minute of the third period, Wollermann finally was able to work a move and get Kroeger to his back. The pin gave the visiting Eagles a 37-6 lead and put the match out of reach, as EHT cruised to a 64-9 victory over the Red Raiders to improve to 15-1 overall and 6-0 in Cape-Atlantic League action.

“I’ve never wrestled him. I was a little bit surprised (that it was only 1-0). I have some things I need to work on,” Wollermann said. “I just have to keep working. I wanted to get more points so it wasn’t so close in the end. Once he started bending over, I thought I could crunch him up with the cradle, and I just hit him with that.”

Egg Harbor Township got some big wins from its usual stars. Terrell Coleman scored a 28-13 win at 120 pounds, and Jason Kaenzig and Paul Vallian scored pins at 145 and heavyweight, respectively. Senior 220-pounder Connor Agostino had some trouble early with Ed Mejia, but eventually built up a 6-1 lead before scoring a pin with 50 seconds left. The Eagles scored a ton of bonus points, getting three technical falls, seven pins and a surprising 11-2 major decision by Christian Smith over Ocean City’s Nick Loesch, who won the 113-pound title at the Marinelli Christmas Tournament a few weeks ago.

“It’s a lot of fun. There’s a lot of good motion and activity in the room. We all work together as a family. We just have fun together,” Wollermann said.

Ocean City had a couple of nice wins, as Cameron Andres built up a 12-5 lead at 138 pounds before scoring a pin at the 5:36 mark, and senior Nick Williams scored a key late reversal to give himself some breathing room in a tough 7-3 win over Misael Velasquez-Hidalgo. The Eagles closed out the match with four straight victories, as Nick Leone (195), Agostino and Valian all scored pins before Louis Vanacore got past Ocean City’s Louie Williams 8-2 in the final bout of the night.
Andrew Ngo picked up a tech fall win at 126 and Cody Dix followed with a pin at 132 to give EHT an early 20-0 lead. Mark Woods added a 19-4 tech fall at 152 to stretch the Eagles’ lead to 31-6 and Matt Moreno padded the lead with a quick pin at 170.
Wollerman said the Eagles, who finished third at the Jack Welch Duals over the weekend, aren’t getting too confident just yet. They’re scheduled to face Hasbrouck Heights and Howell this weekend, and have a big showdown with St. Augustine Prep next Wednesday night.

“Especially now, it’s a grind. We can’t be happy with what we’ve done. We have to keep working and getting better for the next match,” Wollermann said. “We’re just trying to keep the intensity up and have harder, better practices. We want to make each other better.”
