Red Raiders junior center fielder Arianna Segich picked up career hit No. 100 during the season finale against rival Mainland Regional. Glory Days Magazine publisher Dave O’Sullivan caught up with the 16-year-old Ocean City native via a phone interview to talk about softball, surfing and what Arianna doesn’t do yet, but likely will have to start doing soon. (Her own laundry!) Sully: What was that like, getting your 100th career hit? Segich: It was awesome. I was shooting to get it my junior year and actually really happy that I did. My teammates really helped me, and it was amazing getting it when I did, in the last game of the season and against Mainland. Sully: Was that a goal you had in mind since you started your high school career? Or did you just start thinking about it when you got closer to 100? Segich: Yeah, when I entered high school that was my goal.
Ocean City’s Arianna Segich picked up career hit No. 100 in the season finale against Mainland. She’ll have one more season to add to that total, in the spring of 2015. (Glory Days Magazine photo/Dave O’Sullivan) Sully: What kind of hit was it? Segich: It was a single right up the middle. Sully: What has your high school career been like so far? Segich: It’s been good. I came in wanting to get 100 hits and make first team and it feels like it’s all coming true. Sully: What do you think you have to improve upon during your senior year? Segich: Hitting. Sully: Really? Segich: Yeah. I would say 80 of my hits have been bunts, so I’m really going to work harder on my hitting next year. Sully: At what age did you become a slap hitter? Segich: I’d say around seventh grade, when I started playing travel ball. Sully: What was the reasoning behind that? Segich: Being a natural lefty with speed, that was the main reason why I switched to slapping and bunting. Sully: What’s the hardest thing about that swing? It’s a very different swing, you are sort of running as you are swinging. Segich: The feet. You’re moving your feet while you are hitting, so the footwork. Sully: Did you watch any of the Women’s College World Series? Segich: Yes, I have. Sully: What impresses you most about those girls? Segich: The way that their leadoff hitters hit home runs, that impresses me a lot. Sully: Do you think you could make contact against some of those pitchers? Segich: Some of them, yes. Not all of them though. Sully: What’s it like at school now? It must be difficult to stay focused when it’s 80 degrees out. Segich: Yeah, it’s really difficult. You just want to get out and go to the beach and be done with school. Sully: What kind of things do you like to do when you are not playing softball or in school? Segich: Surfing and going to the beach. Sully: Do you think you could ever surf the big waves in Hawaii? Segich: No way, not at all! Sully: What’s the coolest thing about being a softball player, besides the eyeblack? Segich: I like the uniforms, when we wear all black. Sully: Have you started thinking about college yet? Segich: Yeah, we made a video and we’ve been contacting colleges and I’m doing a lot of camps for colleges. Sully: What’s your favorite movie of all time? Segich: I would say … We’re the Millers. I think that’s funny. Sully: What’s something that your mom is constantly getting on your case about? Segich: I would say being more organized and helping out more around the house. Sully: Does she make you do your own laundry yet? Segich: No. Sully: I have a feeling you’re going to have to start doing your own laundry next year. Segich: I think so, too.
