Ericka Skroski is a sophomore on the Rutgers University women’s soccer team. The former Absegami High School standout, who is a starter at fullback, has helped the Scarlet Knights register seven shutouts and a 10-3-2 record. Glory Days Magazine Managing Editor Giuseppe Ungaro caught up with Skroski last week to talk about the 2013 soccer season, her team and life at the New Brunswick campus. Ungaro: How is the season going? Skroski: It’s going pretty good. We are 10-2-1 so we are playing pretty well. Ungaro: Any big games coming up? Skroski: Actually, we only have five games left and they are all conference games so they are all really big games. This weekend we go toericka skroski rutgers Florida for UCF and USF. It is a big weekend, we are away and we are playing really good teams. And after that we play Temple and UConn to complete the regular season. (Rutgers lost 2-1 to Central Florida and tied South Florida 2-2. The Scarlet Knights are now 10-3-2 and host UConn Thursday night at 7 p.m. before finishing the regular season at home against Temple on Sunday at 1 p.m.) Ungaro: What do you like about playing fullback? Skroski: I have liked it my entire life, but at the end of last season I went to the back. I’m comfortable back there. I see it like playing in the middle except I’m playing back more. I like it, I’m comfortable and I’m confident there. I think it’s good for the team. Ungaro: What do you like most about your team? Skroski: My team is basically one big family. The atmosphere is different this year. How we play on the field and how we are off the field, always together, that correlates in our game. We are comfortable with each other. We trust each other. Ungaro: How is school going? Skroski: It’s good. We are getting into the middle of the semester. It’s a challenge with conference play. But now that I’m a sophomore I’m used to it and I know what to expect. We just had our first exam week and it’s already over, so for now we can focus on the last five games. Ungaro: Any interesting classes? Skroski: I’m taking media communication classes, just trying to figure out what I want to declare. I’m still undecided. I’m also taking criminal justice classes to see if I’m interested in that and want to minor in that. I want to be open to different perspectives before everything is finalized. I have to declare at the end of my sophomore year. Ungaro: What do you do with free time? Skroski: During the season it’s mostly just relaxing. I live with four other girls from the team. With free time we relax and watch movies. It’s been an interesting year because the five of us live in an apartment complex with one another and we are all really close. Ungaro: Favorite thing about campus? Skroski: I would say that the campus seems so big. You hear Rutgers has four different campuses and it’s difficult to find your way around. But once you become accustomed to it and are used to it, you can make it as big or small as you want … It’s a college town and you see people that you know from the dorms last year and you see them off campus and in restaurants. It’s cool to see everyone. It’s very diverse and there is a lot of school spirit. When you walk around everyone is wearing Rutgers stuff and it’s a great atmosphere. Ungaro: Why should someone come watch a Rutgers women’s soccer game? Skroski: I think the way we play defines us. I would say that with the competitive level we play at, I would think it would be interesting to watch. The spirit is always high and there is something going on at games. Overall it’s a good atmosphere.
