By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher OCEAN CITY – Aaron King blistered a shot from 15 yards out, a one-timer off a corner kick, in the first half on Thursday afternoon at the Tennessee Avenue fields. Ocean City head coach Aaron Bogushefsky said it was the best volley he had seen all year. One problem. Toms River South keeper reacted in time to make a great save and keep the South Jersey Group 3 championship game scoreless. King got the last laugh, however, scoring with 8:20 left in the game to cap a 2-0 victory that gave the Red Raiders (20-3-1) their second straight sectional championship. Ocean City has appeared in three of the last four sectional title games. White kept the Indians (15-5-2) in the game with several acrobatic saves in the first half, and it took Ocean City more than 55 minutes to get on the board. With less than 25 minutes to go in a scoreless game, Ryan Beebe stepped in front of an Indians defender to possess a goal kick, then lofted a pass to Donnie VanMeter, who had seen the change in possession coming and began to break for the goal. Bogushefsky said the work Beebe and Kyle Millar did in the midfield was the difference in the game. “(Beebe) had a great game. Every game he and Kyle do such a great job of dictating what goes on in the middle of the field,” Bogushefsky said. “Kyle played more defensive today, Beebe was making a lot of passes because he was sitting a little more offensive. Both of them did their jobs perfectly, I couldn’t have asked for anything better.” The coach said he wasn’t surprised at all that his team rose to the challenge and delivered when it came to the last 25 minutes of the game. “We thrive under the pressure. That’s not usually how we score goals, but according to their game plan, this is how we adjusted,” Bogushefsky said. “This is such a resilient group. I can put anybody anywhere and they get the job done.” The players said the feeling of winning a sectional championship is just as sweet the second time around. “It’s awesome. Winning it twice in a row, it’s so great,” Beebe said. “It speaks to the quality of the program, to be able to win this two years in a row and to be able to make runs like this. It feels great not to lose in the last home game.” Said VanMeter, “Before the game coach was saying ‘champions win one championship, kings win two.’ So, I’m glad to say, I guess we are kings.” Contact Dave O’Sullivan: sully@acglorydays.com; on Twitter @GDsullysays  [adsense]
