By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher The Avalon Limo Drive of the Game from Week 3 comes from Mainland vs. Ocean City, as the Mustangs’ defense sparked an offensive drive that cemented a 33-19 victory by Mainland. Facing a 25-19 deficit late in the third quarter, Ocean City drove all the way down inside Mainland’s 5-yard line before the Mustangs defense forced a turnover on downs. The Mustangs stopped two straight running plays before Taylor Dirkes made an outstanding play, diving to break up a slant pass intended for Ocean City’s Noah Aungst on 4th-and-goal. If they Mustangs couldn’t get the ball out from deep in their own end, they would be in trouble. They did much more than that, marching 97 yards to extend their lead to 33-19 and essentially put the game out of reach.
Justin Bishop had more than 200 yards receiving to go along with a CAL-record four touchdown catches during Mainland’s 33-19 win over Ocean City on Friday night. (Glory Days Magazine photo/Dave O’Sullivan) Facing third down from inside the 10-yard line, quarterback Sam Jackson hit wide receiver Justin Bishop (6 catches, 208 yards, 4 TDs) on a screen pass. Bishop sprinted up the right sideline before being knocked out of bounds at midfield. Kobe Roberts ran for a 5-yard gain before Jackson picked up a first down inside the Ocean City 40-yard line on a bootleg. Roberts ran again, this time for just a yard, before the third quarter ended. On the first play of the fourth quarter, with the wind at his back, Jackson took to the air again. He lofted a pass down the right sideline and Bishop outleaped a defender, making an acrobatic catch at the goal line for his fourth touchdown of the night — which set a Cape-Atlantic League record for touchdown receptions in a game, according to local CAL historian Tom Williams. Teddy Bergman, who had a monster game on defense for Mainland, punched in the 2-point conversion on a sweep left as Mainland Regional built a 14-point lead, 33-19. The defense did the rest, stopping Ocean City (0-3) on the Red Raiders’ next three possessions. Bishop put a cherry on top of his performance with an interception with less than seven minutes to go that helped put the game on ice.
