If you haven’t heard the name Asia Young yet, don’t worry, it won’t be long until you start hearing it a lot. Young is coming off an outstanding winter track season, and kept up her hot streak this past weekend at the Woodbury Relays. At Woodbury, Young won the long jump event by leaping 19 feet, 2.25 inches. She also anchored Holy Spirit’s 4×400-meter relay team that finished first, and her efforts garnered her the female MVP award at the prestigious event. She teamed with Ayana Plummer, Ariyana Wilks and Kristy Goff to win the 4×4, and her long jump distance set a record for Atlantic County and the Cape-Atlantic League.
Holy Spirit’s Asia Young set a new league record in the long jump on Saturday at the Woodbury Relays. In the long jump, Young was stuck in second place after five attempts, but soared on her final attempt to pass Tionna Tobias of Winslow Township to take the gold medal, or, in this case, the coveted Woodbury watch that is given out to winners. For her efforts, Young has been named the Bunting Family Pharmacy Athlete of the Week. During the winter track season, Young became a state champion in the 400 meters, as she took home first place at the Non-Public Group A and B state championships in Toms River in late February with a time of 1:01.45. Last spring, Young, then a junior, broke a school record in the long jump with a leap of 18-2 at the South Jersey Non-Public B championships. It marked the second straight season in which Young took home the sectional title in that event.
