Brian McGroarty is just a sophomore at Mainland Regional High School, but he’s quickly gaining a name for himself as one of the top swimmers in the Cape-Atlantic League. Last year, as a freshman, McGroarty went undefeated in the CAL in the 200 IM event, and so far this year he is undefeated as well. It’s a little different this year because we lost some kids and gained some new kids, so it’s just all different,” McGroarty said. “I feel like I’ve been swimming well. What I hope to do is get faster toward the end of the season, so I’m still working to get to that.” McGroarty also swims the 100 breaststroke and is unbeaten in that even the two times he has swam it so far this season. He’s also in the 200 medley relay and the 400 free relay, and has helped the Mustangs jump out to a 5-0 start so far this season. “At the beginning of the season I was kind of nervous because we lost some pretty good guys from last year, but we’re doing better than what I expected and I expect us to keep going strong,” McGroarty said. “We have a tough meet after winter break, and that will show us how good we really are.” Mainland takes on powerful St. Augustine Prep on Monday, Jan. 5, in Buena Vista, then squares off against rival Ocean City later that week.
