By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher MAYS LANDING — The Oakcrest High School field hockey team has just five wins this season, but the Falcons will take the kind they got on Tuesday afternoon. The No. 8 Falcons pulled away from ninth-seeded Cedar Creek in the second half, scoring a 5-1 victory in the opening round of the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs. For their efforts, the Falcons get a second-round matchup with top-seeded West Deptford, the No. 9 team in the state according to nj.com, on Halloween. But, for now, Oakcrest will enjoy its win over the rival Pirates, its second victory over Cedar Creek this season. The Falcons edged the Pirates 3-2 in their only regular-season meeting, on Sept. 26.
Cedar Creek’s Rhian Friere tries to get around Oakcrest defender Teagen Hay during the teams’ playoff matchup. Toy said she didn’t mind playing a Cape-Atlantic League rival in the opening round of the playoffs. It made preparing for the game much easier. “I would say it was an advantage because we knew how they play and what we needed to do to work against that. We knew what kind of team they are and what we need to look out for. I prefer to play games like that so we are not shocked when we play a team we’ve never played before,” Toy said. “Cedar Creek is a sister school and a rival. A lot of the girls play together on travel teams. They find it fun, but they are definitely out for blood when they play each other. They are very competitive. Toy said her Falcons don’t have anything to lose on Saturday against West Deptford (18-0-1), so she doesn’t think her players will put any unneeded pressure on themselves when they play the Eagles. She certainly knows the challenge that lies ahead, however. “We play West Deptford next. We played them last year, and they are a very well-organized team,” Toy said. “Being from a different area, sometimes you get a different type of game, so it’s definitely going to be a challenge.” Contact Dave O’Sullivan: sully@acglorydays.com; on Twitter @GDsullysays [adsense]
