By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP — Vinny Levin didn’t make it out of districts last year. He’s on a mission not to repeat that fate this season. The Ocean City senior wrestled more than 100 matches in the offseason. That preparation was evident on Tuesday night, as he was sharp in capturing the title in the 152-pound weight class with a convincing 13-7 win over Clearview’s Henry Eisenhart at the Arthur O. Marinelli tournament at Egg Harbor Township High School. “I worked hard all offseason and hard work pays off. I knew I would do well. I always just go out and do my best, and whatever happens, happens,” Levin said. “We both wrestled pretty hard. I thought it was a pretty nice match. I knew he was tough. I mean, anyone who is in the finals of this is obviously going to be tough, and I know Clearview is a really good team.”

(Glory Days Magazine photos/Dave O’Sullivan) Levin got an early takedown, but Eisenhart escaped to cut the deficit in half, then escaped after choosing the down position to start the second period, tying the bout at 2. From there it was all Levin. He got another takedown and a near-fall to take a 7-2 lead. “I just club and snap and wear the guy out, attach his head, really,” Levin said. He also got a quick escape in the third period to push his lead to 9-4, and said he wasn’t surprised he was able to escape so easily. “I drill my stand-up a lot to be quick off the whistle. A lot of hard work goes into it,” Levin said. Another local who impressed was EHT sophomore Terrell Coleman, a sophomore who advanced all the way to the finals at 106 pounds before falling 4-0 to Haddonfield’s Evan Finnegan. Coleman was a junior varsity wrestler last year who didn’t even have to cut any weight to wrestle at 106 pounds as a freshman.
James Giegold of Absegami looks to turn Vineland’s Steve Bergamo during their bout at 113 pounds in the finals. “It was a good experience. It was a decent match, but I think I could have wrestled better though. I was pretty nervous,” Coleman said. “I didn’t think I was going to make it that far, but I’m pretty excited that I did. I think I’m off to a good start.” The match of the day came at 138 pounds, where Clearview’s Mike Van Brill scored a takedown 30 seconds into overtime to outlast Williamstown’s Anthony Racobaldo. That win earned Van Brill the Most Outstanding Wrestler award for the tournament, and Clearview beat out Cinnaminson and West Deptford to take home the team title. Vineland had a pair of winners, as Steve Bergamo handled Absegami’s James Giegold at 113 pounds, and Tiawahn Cosby edged Cinnaminson’s Tom Halecki 7-5 at 220 pounds.
