By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher PLEASANTVILLE – Oscar Mencia knew nothing of the boys soccer history at Pleasantville High School when he started this school year after arriving from El Salvador. No matter. The sophomore midfielder set about writing a new history at the school on Monday afternoon. Mencia scored a hat trick, helping fifth-seeded Pleasantville come from behind to beat No. 12 Buena Regional, 4-2, in what according to Greyhounds coach Mark Eykyn is the first playoff victory in school history. The Greyhounds (13-6) advance to the second round of the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs and will travel to No. 4 Middle Township (15-4-2) on Thursday. Mencia, who didn’t play in Pleasantville’s first six games while he got his paperwork in order and logged the requisite practice time, capped the scoring with his third goal, a sizzling direct kick from 25 yards out that went into the upper left corner of the goal. “He even surprised me. He’s a good player and we’re glad to have him on the team,” Flores said of Mencia, who came up big with top scoring threat Derlin Jimenez going down in the first half with what coach Eykyn said was possibly a slight concussion. “Every game that we’ve scored second in, we’ve lost. So this is a good sign moving forward into the playoffs that we can come from behind and win,” Eykyn said. “And even with Derlin getting that concussion in the first 15 minutes we realized we have other goal scorers. Oscar stepped up real big and Alexis played unbelievably in goal, and Emilio had a nice goal. It’s good moving forward that we know that we have the confidence if we are down that we can come back and win the game.” Eykyn said it was fun, after the Greyhounds got the lead, of course. “It was nice to see all those fans in the stands. It was fun to be down and be able to come back and get the win,” Eykyn said. Eykyn said that with the creative style his team plays with having so many latin players, sometimes you have to live with occasional breakdowns in the shape on defense. “They have their tricks and their moves and the things that they do. We just incorporate that but still try to maintain some kind of game plan, make sure they are still marking on defense and that the midfield is still hustling up and back,” Eykyn said. “And in the second half, they did that. I told them at halftime, that one play you take off and don’t get back and mark that guy could be the play they get the goal. They really picked it up in that second half.” Flores had much less to say when describing the win. “It’s pretty awesome.” Contact Dave O’Sullivan: sully@acglorydays.com; on Twitter @GDsullysays [adsense]
