By DAVE O’SULLIVAN Publisher BUENA VISTA — After losing to Lower Cape May Regional last week, the Ocean City girls basketball players had one thing on their mind Wednesday night — get a rematch with the Caper Tigers in the Cape-Atlantic League tournament championship game. All they had to do was get through rival Mainland Regional, a team that has won 19 games, tied Holy Spirit for the top spot in the American Conference standings, and came in riding a 7-game winning streak — including an emotional overtime win over Middle Township in the quarterfinals. No problem for the top-seeded Red Raiders. Ocean City limited fourth-seeded Mainland to just four points in the first half and ran away with a 35-19 victory at St. Augustine Prep, setting up that anticipated showdown with Lower Cape May on Saturday at noon at Stockton College. Lower rallied from nine points down in the fourth quarter to beat Holy Spirit 45-40 in the other semifinal.
Shea Scannell finished with seven points to lead the Mustangs in scoring. Bourbeau nailed a 3-pointer early in the third quarter to stretch Ocean City’s lead to 17-7, and after consecutive baskets by Schoenewald and Bourbeau the lead swelled to 21-7. Shea Scannell hit a 3-pointer with 2:20 left in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 28-17, but that’s as close as the Mustangs could get. Olivia Briggs led Ocean City with nine points and nine rebounds and Nicole Piergross added six points and four rebounds. Point guard Grace Sacco chipped in five points and four assists. Scannell led Mainland with seven points, and Megan Stafford had 13 rebounds. “We wanted to stay with what worked, execute more and obviously keep getting better every game, and I think we did perform the best we could today. Obviously there is room to improve,” Bourbeau said. “It’s always scrappy when you play a rival.” Contact Dave O’Sullivan: sully@acglorydays.com; on Twitter @GDsullysays [adsense]
