When your team’s back is against the wall in the opening round of the state playoffs, you need a playmaker to make a big play. That’s exactly what the Cedar Creek High School football team got from junior Bo Melton, who has made highlight-reel plays all season for the Pirates. The Pirates, the No. 3 seed in the South Jersey Group 2 playoffs, were trailing No. 6 Collingswood 21-7 in the third quarter of their first-round game on Nov. 14. Melton, normally a wide receiver and occasional running back, lined up at the quarterback spot for a read-option play. The snap was off the mark, however, forcing Melton to improvise. He eluded the defense, ran to the right and launched a pass that Isaiah Watson caught and took to the house for a 30-yard touchdown. Bo Melton scored all three touchdowns on Nov. 14 as Cedar Creek slipped past Collingswood 21-20 in the opening round of the South Jersey Group 2 state playoffs. Pat Moran’s extra point proved to be the difference, as Cedar Creek held on for a 21-20 win. For his efforts, Melton is our Bunting Family Pharmacy Athlete of the Week. Melton, who already has received a scholarship offer from Rutgers University, among a couple of other schools, has been getting it done all season. He’s the Cape-Atlantic League’s leading receiver with 732 yards on 25 receptions, 11 of which have gone for touchdowns. He averages an astounding 29.3 yards per reception. He also has been one of the league’s top running backs, rushing for nearly 450 yards and another seven touchdowns. He averages 6.6 yards per carry from the backfield. His talents have helped lead the Pirates to an 8-1 record and a CAL National Conference championship. The No. 3 Pirates travel to No. 2 Haddonfield on Friday night in the second round of the state playoffs.
